Where Mining Ostrava Was Born
Discover Slezská Ostrava, one of the city's oldest districts, first mentioned 38 years before the first record of Moravian Ostrava.
While Moravian Ostrava immediately gained the status of a town, it took 691 years before Slezská Ostrava — then known as Polish Ostrava — officially became a town on September 17, 1920.
Join us as we explore the history of one of the largest mining towns in former Czechoslovakia. Where small miners' pub witnessed the birth of Baník Ostrava football club, and the area became home to the third-largest Jewish community in the Czech lands.
Although the original appearance of the district has been lost to industrial growth, traces of its early history still whisper through old maps and stories.
Join us in exploring this powerful part of Ostrava's past — a district born from coal, labor, and resilience.
