After the Basilica in Velehrad the Cathedral is the second largest sacred object in Moravia. Two 67 m high towers, dated 1889, are the part of the Neo-Renaissance Basilica that has three naves crowned with semicircular apse.
The church was designed by Gustav Meretta, the official architect of the Archbishop of Olomouc, and the interior by Max von Ferstel. The main nave is 14 m wide and 22 m high. The side asles are 7 m wide and 10 m high. On the level of the side naves is situated the three-piece cornice, supported by 12 sandstone columns with Ionic warheads. Vaulting of the nave is divided by columns with Corinthian warheads. The fresco painted by J. Stalmach above the main altar shows „Adoration of the Lamb”. Basilica is famed for huge frontage and massive stairs. On the top of the building is the stone sculpture of the Savior along with seven smaller figures of the blinds and infirms – Biblical quotation „Come to me, everyone”. Under the peak are the sculptures of St. Joseph and St. Aloysius.
The seating capacity of the cathedral is 4,000 people. On May 30, 1996 Pope John Paul II established the Ostrava-Opava Diocese. As a result on 01. 09. 1996 the basilica was dignified into a cathedral. In 1998, a new Neo-Baroque organ designed by master Vaclav Smolka has been installed.
The Cathedral is opened from May 29th to October 31st 2021:
Tuesday-Saturday: 8:15-12:15, 13:15-17:15
