The main Jewish synagogue once stood in Zeyerova Street, just a short distance from Masaryk Square. It was opened on 15th September 1879, and was built in the historicist Moorish style. Unfortunately, in 1939 it was burned down by the Nazis. In its place now stands a monument commemorating both this synagogue and 8,000 Jewish victims of World War II in Ostrava.
The monument itself is made of a material called Corten, which is a type of steel. This material is covered with special rust and is then much more resistant to weather conditions. Through a star-shaped window it is possible to see into space, into the sky. According to the author of the monument, Eva Jančeková, we can thus look at our ancestors. The co-creator of the memorial, Lukáš Dvorský, then likens this window to the journey, for example the journey on the railway tracks, along which the Jews were deported.
