The works of Michal Škapa, one of the most prominent authors associated with Czech graffiti, will be displayed in Hans Ulrich villa at Sokolská třída 26. The exhibition called Light Years, started on January 11 and will end on March 28.
Michal Škapa /1978/ has an exhibitoon in Ostrava for the very first time. His works were created on the street, and through engagements in Europe and the USA, they gradually reached the most important galleries. "Michal Škapa's works are truly fascinating and full of unsettling tension. I am glad that we can present the works of this world-class artist in Ostrava," said Dominik Beneš, dramaturg of the Center for Culture and Education, which prepared the exhibition.
Michal Škapa was one of the authors associated with Trafo Gallery in Prague and regularly collaborates with Meet Factory, where he has his own studio. As an artist, he works with various media and formats, from murals, acrylic abstraction of manuscripts and airbrush figurative compositions to site-specific installations and spatial objects. This will become obvious to anyone who visits the Ostrava exhibition, with it's many neon objects. Some works were painted by Škapa directly on the gallery wall. Others shine so clearly that they can be observed even by people who are just passing by the villa after dark.
"We conceived the exhibition as a walk-through space that is supposed to show the interior of this supervilla in a slightly different way," said the curator of the villa Radek Wohlmut about the concept of the exhibition.
"A big thank you to the gallery for being so generous and letting me work with a space like this. This is not common at all," said Michal Škapa about the approach of the Center for Culture and Education.
