The main goals of the 'Postbauhaus: Memories of the Future' exhibition is to partially replace the former role of Bauhaus and to offer the communities and organizations that used the former hobby market a new headquarters of the gallery for their activities. The largest hall of the reconstructed historical slaughterhouse will be transformed into a practical background for public events and young Czech and Polish artists will be able to present their work there. Postbauhaus will open on September 25th at 6pm and will run for 7 months.
Bauhaus closed at the end of June after six years of operation and the new Postbauhaus exhibition will serve as a sort of a replacement for a period of time. The gallery is trying to transfer the atmosphere and friendliness to the activities of communities and various organizations from the old Bauhaus to the new headquarters, which is architecturally completely different. "It is an exhibition and a functional environment at the same time. Similarly to old Bauhaus, we built a practical space for community meetings, workshops or other events for people from Ostrava, and we also used fragments of equipment from our former headquarters. Of course, we want Postbauhaus to serve both existing platforms and new artists and people looking for a safe place. We also offer information about what Bauhaus was, and how and who it served," project curator Jakub Adamec says about the plan. It is already clear that the support group for parents with children, the Third Hand, will meet here, there will be regular workshops of the Secondary Art School in Ostrava, and also a presentation of a project by the Faculty of Social Studies of the University of Ostrava on the topic of social exclusion. Those interested in using the space can contact Lívia Škutová at livie.skutova@plato-ostrava.cz.
Young people will exhibit
Young artists from the Czech Republic and Poland will exhibit in the space. They are connected to the idea of Postbauhaus by values close to the gallery and the cooperating communities. Maje Janczar and Adam Kozické are close to the idea of (post)art, in which social engagement is permanently combined with creative activism. Paweł Sobczak focuses on the places he comes from, the motives of discovering one's own sexuality and the social exclusion that it entails. This trio represents the young generation of Polish painters. The new Czech video is also represented by a trio: the work of Sofia Gjuričová and Jasmína Lustigová straddles the line between architectural criticism and artistic fiction and tells the story of a place full of historical paradoxes in an ironic way. Oskar Helcel lets architect Zaha Hadid go through the purgatory of her future building at Prague's Masaryk station. Both critical stories about urbanism and public space take place in Prague, but the problem is global. Martin Pfann is presenting his object creations on the theme of the resistance during the Second World War in Vysočina.
PLATO is counting with platforms, schools and organizations in the long term even after the end of this project. "At Postbauhaus, we want to test how we work together in the new headquarters, and also find out what form of coexistence is even possible. We intend to transfer the partnership activities primarily to the studio on the first floor of the gallery. It is clear that the conditions will be more modest compared to old Bauhaus. We have cultivated long-term relationships with communities and have succeeded in building mutual trust. We want to continue building this trust in the future as well," adds PLATO director Marek Pokorný.
Recycling of Temporary Structures
PLATO collaborates with artists during the creation of the interior. This is how the Temporary Structures at the Bauhaus were created. For the architecture of the Postbauhaus, the curator approached Medard Zeman, who incorporated fragments of Bauhaus structures into it and used them in a new way. In Postbauhas, visitors will find, for example, part of the curtains from the stage (by Than Hussein Clark in collaboration with CPWH), a piece of which has been transformed into a vertical object. Part of the library shelves (by Jan Šerých) was used for the architectural division of the space and will also serve as a base for the installation of paintings, smaller objects or sculptures. From the cinema (by Zuza Golińska), four raised platforms were used, including a carpet and pink mattresses, and they will create a small stage and at the same time a more intimate zone, for example for parents with children. Milan Houser's painting, which was paradoxically used in the store as a counter top for displaying books, was returned to its original function by the curator and the architect. Bags from the "chain wardrobe" (author Klára Hosnedlová) then filled the books as a surprise for recommended reading.
PLATO Bauhaus
The former hobby market building, located across the street from the new building, was the gallery's temporary home for four and a half years. For the next almost two years, the gallery operated both buildings simultaneously and organized a program at PLATO Bauhaus and provided its premises for the activities of a number of Ostrava educational, cultural and social organizations and groups. During that time, many people and communities have found their way into the 5,000 square meter space of outstanding openness, both factually and symbolically. PLATO ceased operations here on June 30, 2024, as the city of Ostrava is planning a new construction at this location in the near future
