New Christmas tram runs through Ostrava

Children playing in a snowy clearing, with Ostrava's dominant landmarks in the background, forest animals, a comet with a 65-meter-long glowing tail, and 16 glowing snowflakes. This year, Ostrava residents can enjoy the Christmas tram of the Ostrava Public Transport Company (DPO). Passengers on the tram can also expect a decorated interior, carols, a glowing Christmas tree, and a special program including, for example, musical performances during Advent days. The Ostrava Christmas tram runs through the city on a specific timetable.

The timetable is available on the DPO website (albeit in Czech only). The graphic design of the Christmas tram is trying to invoke happy memories from childhood and it was designed specifically by DPO for their Christmas tram. The windows of the Christmas tram, which is by the way the most modern tram from the DPO Škoda 39T fleet, have also been decorated with two photo corners with mistletoe and a Christmas wreath, inviting you to take a nice selfie. The advertising foil was applied by an agency, and the installation of the light decorations was ensured by DPO technicians.

“This year we are pleased to say that we will brighten the days of not only the youngest tram travellers but also the residents of Ostrava, who will happily enjoy seeing our Christmas tram roll by. We believe that this magical moment, when a Christmas decorated and illuminated tram appears from the dark night, can be an amazing experience for children that will remember it for a very long time. It is important to us that public transport in Ostrava invokes positive emotions,” says Daniel Morys, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of DPO.

“This year too, we wanted the Christmas tram to run across the city in a way that would please as many Ostrava residents as possible. It will cross the center, as well as individual city districts on various lines. Inside the tram, Ostrava residents will also find information about the Ostrava Christmas events and an interesting Christmas program for residents on various main squares in Ostrava,” says Jan Dohnal, Mayor of Ostrava.

“The christmas tram will also have a board with a posted program of Ostrava Christmas and the events in various city districts for passengers. We cordially invite everyone to the Christmas and Advent markets across Ostrava,” added Pavlína Merendová, on behalf of Ostrava Christmas.

This year, the program inside the Christmas tram also includes security forces for the first time. Police prevention officers will educate on the topic of safe travel in the car.

“We are pleased that we can be part of the Christmas tram for the first time this year. For us, this is an unconventional form of prevention and meeting with citizens, who will be able to provide valuable advice on how not to become an easy victim of theft, not only in the pre-Christmas period,” concludes Miroslav Plaček, Director of the Ostrava Municipal Police.

The first working week of December also starts with the traditional DPO Turquoise Fundraiser, a charity project supporting local non-profit organizations. For four days (from 2 December to 5 December), volunteers with money boxes will ride in public transport vehicles accompanied by transport assistants. The main project chosen for this year is the Ondrášek Mobile Hospice. They care for terminally ill people who wish to spend their last days of life with their families. The proceeds will go to support palliative health services for families of terminally ill children.

People can contribute not only directly in the vehicles, but also with any amount via QR code on the website tyrkysovasbirka.cz, where they can also find detailed information about all supported projects.
