From December 17, 2025 passengers will once again be able to take the tram across Náměstí Republiky instead of changing for the replacement service buses. After more than four months, the Ostrava Transport Company (DPO) plans to restore the tram traffic across Frýdlantské mosty, where further stages of the modernization of the transport hub continue. From December 17, new public transport timetables will also apply, including the reinforcement of line No. 2. Thanks to the adjustment, passengers from Ostrava-Jih will reach the city center every 5 minutes during peak hours.
“We are pleased that the work schedule will allow for the resumption of direct tram traffic via Náměstí republiky on the announced date. The resumption of traffic, as with any other construction of this type, must still be approved by the Transport and Energy Construction Authority, which will make a decision on December 16. We thank all passengers for their patience and also our drivers who had to deal with the closure of traffic across the ongoing construction,” says Daniel Morys, Chairman of the Board and CEO of DPO, adding: “We also have a Christmas present for the residents of Ostrava-South, line no. 2 will now have a five-minute interval during peak hours. In view of the high use and positive feedback from passengers, we are continuing to operate line no. 13, which was originally planned to operate only until the end of the Náměstí republiky closure. The aim of the changes is to better adapt transport to the actual needs of passengers.”
In view of the ongoing construction work and our efforts to end the tram closure as soon as possible, the relocated Náměstí Republiky stops will function as temporary wooden platforms for the time being. In the direction of Ostrava-Poruba, the existing platform on 28. října Street will remain in place, while in the direction of Vítkovice and Ostrava-Jih, a new platform on Vítkovická Street will be erected.
“We have all been impatiently waiting for this moment. The opening of Náměstí Republiky will make the transport around the city significantly smoother for the residents. Construction on Náměstí Republiky continues, and as announced, it will continue to 2026. Other stages of construction will follow. Completion is planned for the summer of 2026, and Ostrava will then have a modern transport hub that the city and its residents deserve,” says Jan Dohnal, Mayor of Ostrava.
"I am glad that public transport passengers in Ostrava will be relieved thanks to the opening of the tram area. We also have other good news, a new tariff has been announced from 14 December 2025, in which fare prices will not change," says Břetislav Riger, Deputy Mayor for Transport, adding: "Based on data from automatic passenger counting, measurement of line occupancy and passenger suggestions, the new timetables will also include adjustments to lines in the Ostrava-South city district. The most significant adjustment will be the shortening of the interval of the backbone line No. 2."
"We are pleased that the construction coordination across all affected entities has proven positive with the Náměstí republiky renovation. In the case of road bridges, the necessary coordination of work with the tram bridges being reconstructed at the same time plays an important role. Our priority is to ensure safe and high-quality modifications to the road infrastructure. We also place special emphasis on road traffic safety, both for drivers and pedestrians and cyclists," says Radek Podstawka, Deputy Governor of the Regional Municipality of the Region.
The reconstruction of the bridges still requires several more stages of road traffic restrictions. After December 17, 2025, only the exit ramp on Senovážná Street will be operational, for public transport buses, public scheduled transport and the integrated rescue system. The direction to Poruba will remain closed to all traffic due to ongoing repairs to the city sewer system. In the direction to the center, both direct lanes will continue to be closed from December 17, 2025, individual car traffic will be diverted to Vítkovická Street.
The modernization of the transport hub on Náměstí Republiky consists of a complete reconstruction of the bridges and the roads and tracks located on them, including the underpass area. The three existing tram platforms will be reduced to two, and a level crossing will be established between them, which will allow for smoother transfers during travel. Access to the platforms from the surrounding area will be facilitated by travelators and elevators. Along with the improvement of the environment, the quality of tram transport will also increase.
Passengers can find the new timetables valid from December 17, 2025 at the DPO website. With regard to the strengthening of line No. 2 and the maintenance of line No. 13, line No. 6 will be canceled. From December 14, 2025, a new tariff will be announced, in which the prices of short-term and long-term fares will not change.
