How to enjoy the Golden Spike

The Golden Spike is one of the most important sporting events of the year in Ostrava and regularly brings world-class athletic stars and thousands of fans to the city. A day full of top performances is also a great opportunity to get to know Ostrava outside the stadium. 

If you are going to the races, it would be a shame to spend the day only in the stands. In the vicinity you will find a number of places where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the city, taste the local gastronomy or get to know Ostrava from a slightly different perspective. 

A day with the Spike starts even before the first race

If you arrive in the city earlier, the ideal stop is the Dolní Vítkovice area. Today, the former industrial complex is one of the most important industrial monuments and offers a unique view of the city's history. A walk among the blast furnaces and technical buildings has an atmosphere that you will not easily find anywhere else in the Czech Republic. 

While in Vítkovice you can visit the Bolt Tower - a lookout point at the top of the blast furnace. From here you can see the center of Ostrava, the industrial panorama and the distant Beskydy Mountains. If you are traveling with your family, the Vítkovice area also offers the Big World of Technology and the Small World of Technology U6 with interactive exhibitions for young and old visitors. 

Where to go after the races 

After the main program, the evening definitely doesn't have to end. From Vítkovice, you can head to the center of Ostrava, where other interesting places, businesses and cultural experiences await you. A pleasant stop is the Masaryk Square and the surrounding pedestrian zone with coffee shops and restaurants. 

If you want to see Ostrava from above once again, head to the Observation Tower of the New Town Hall. It offers a completely different view than the Bolt Tower - you will see the historical center, the Ostravice River and the surrounding landscape. 

Culture lovers can visit the PLATO Ostrava gallery in the former city slaughterhouse or the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava - House of Arts. Families with children can also head to Papilonia, the butterfly house in the city center. 

How to get to the stadium 

During the Golden Spike, it is usual to experience heavier car traffic around the stadium and Vítkovice. Therefore the fastest and most convenient option is the public transport.

You can easily get to the stadium by trams and buses. 

Nearest stops: 

• “Sport Aréna” 
• “Městský stadion” 

Both stops are just a few minutes’ walk from the entrances to the venue.

Parking 

Parking possibilities around the stadium are limited and tend to fill up quickly during the event. If you are arriving by car, it is worth arriving early or parking further away from the venue and using public transport.
