Ostrava and the entire Moravian-Silesian Region are becoming an increasingly popular destination for congresses, conferences, corporate meetings, training courses and other work events. According to statistics from the Czech Tourism agency, a total of 2,686 events took place in 2025, which is 22.8% more than in the previous year, while the number increased by 11% in the entire Czech Republic.

Congress and corporate tourism is an important part of tourism. “The growth in the number of conferences, congresses and corporate events is good news for the entire region. Each such event brings new visitors to Ostrava and other places who use our hotels, restaurants and other services. At the same time, it is an opportunity to show them that our region is worth visiting not only for work purposes, but also in their free time,” said Šárka Šimoňáková, 1st Deputy Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region for Regional Development and Tourism.

The Moravian-Silesian Region and the Statutory City of Ostrava have been jointly involved in the development and financial support of congress tourism since 2023. “We want Ostrava to be a destination where people do not go purely for experiences, but also for work, professional meetings and new opportunities for cooperation. Congress and conference tourism plays an important role in this, helping to strengthen Ostrava’s position as a modern and open city and at the same time contributing to year-round visitor numbers. We therefore see its support as a meaningful part of the city’s further development and competitiveness,” described Jan Dohnal, Mayor of the Statutory City of Ostrava.

Significantly more events are taking place not only throughout the year, but also during the summer months. In July and August 2025, 200 events took place in the region compared to 145 in 2024, which represents an increase of almost 38%. The number of multi-day events is also growing. Events lasting two or more days accounted for a total of 21.8% of all registered events in 2025. The share of events lasting three or more days increased from 6.2% in 2024 to 7.4% in 2025. For the region, this means primarily more overnight stays and higher use of tourism services.

“We are pleased that we are successfully attracting more and more companies, agencies and other organizers to the region. At Moravian-Silesian Tourism, we have a manager for the area of congress and corporate tourism. Through the Ostrava Convention Bureau, we present the possibilities of the region and help organizers find suitable places for their events. The growing numbers are a confirmation that this work makes sense,” added Petr Koudela, CEO of Moravian-Silesian Tourism.

The data also shows that congress tourism is not only about large events. 86.6% of registered events had 10 to 149 participants, while events with more than 149 participants accounted for 13.3%. Small and medium-sized meetings, conferences, training courses and corporate events thus represent the basis of the market. In addition, the Moravian-Silesian Region is increasingly attracting participants from all over the Czech Republic. The share of participants coming from other parts of the country increased from 34.2% in 2024 to 37.2% in 2025.
