PLATO is a municipal contemporary art gallery in Ostrava. Main exhibitions can be found in the PLATO building, a reconstructed, heritage-listed municipal slaughterhouse from the late 19th century.
Gallery, cafe and garden
Plato provides a spot for everyone who wants to understand the contemporary world in a broader context. It reflects the worlds complexity and richness through art in an international context and at the highest possible level. The architectural solution of the building allows six walls to be rotated, thus opening up the building from all sides. There is also a cafe and a library here.
A freely acessible garden surrounds the building on both sides (established in Autumn 2022). The 'garden of presence', as Plato calls it, is permacultural, i.e. ecological, ethical and meaningfully arranged for both humans and animals. Plato will gradually develop it over the years.
In addition to exhibitions, Plato organizes lectures, programs for children and schools, or creative residencies. It places special emphasis on issues of feminism, ecology and social justice, and art in the context of other disciplines.
Prolong your trip?
A great location in the city center offers opportunities for further exploration. You can enjoy the view of the whole of Ostrava from the observation tower of the New Town Hall. Very close to the Plato is another art gallery, located in the functionalist House of Arts - the Ostrava Gallery of Fine Arts.
