Discover a Local Touch of English Charm
Vítkovice have unique architecture. In the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a significant development of heavy industry in the area of today's Vítkovice, and practically from scratch, a new city was built. It is characterized by rectangular streets and distinctive buildings made of red bare brick that resemble old England.
Already at the beginning of the route, at Mírové náměstí, the typical features of Vítkovice are unmistakable. The town hall with a plaque commemorating the founder of Nové Vítkovice, Paul Kupelwieser, the factory hotel and gym, and the st. Paul church are all built from exposed red bricks. This material is also used for the kindergarten, market hall, and the houses of the Štítová Colony. The colony, designed by Hans Ulrich and Heinrich Heindl, consists of 32 single-story houses. It is located on today's Tržní, Nerudová, and Lidická streets. The Štítová Colony was part of the urban project of the so-called New Vítkovice and was a part of the housing stock of the Vítkovice Ironworks.
In 2003, the historic core of the Vítkovice district was declared a city heritage zone.
