Ostrava New City Hall is the largest Town Hall in the Czech Republic. It was built in 1925-1930 from a design by V. Fischer, F. Kolář and J. Rubý. In present it is the headquarters of the City of Ostrava, the Moravian Silesian Scientific Library, the „Česká spořitelna” bank and the tourist information centre OSTRAVAINFO!!! Viewing Tower.
In the foyer there is an art gallery with the bust of Jan Prokeš, the first Mayor of the town after 1918 (design by Jan Gajda). The bust was unveiled on December 09, 2005 to commemorate 70th anniversary of his death.
The building has very interesting interiors in the functionalism, prevailing in those days. The chandeliers are made of polished Czech cut-glass and some windows are decorated with the emblems of the town and the region.
From the 73 m high terrace of the viewing tower one can admire the beautiful views of the town, Beskidy Mountains, Basin of the Oder river and the bordering territories of Poland. The tower is open all year long.
An interesting detail of the Town Hall is the wooden lift, called „paternoster” dated 1928. The lift was renovated in 2004 and it was proposed to be included on the Register of Technical Heritage. The lift was notified for inclusion in the list of technical monuments.
The New City Hall has a restaurant on the ground floor.
